Burbank, CA On August 28th at Joe's Great American Bar and Grill in Burbank a blues lovin' crowd will gather to support one of their own. Seven blues bands alongside some very special guests will entertain the crowd and remind everyone how important it is to help each other.
The August 28th event starts at 2pm with performances by R&B Bombers, The Scorch Sisters, Blues Straight Up, Kelly's Lot, The Delgado Brothers, Teresa James and Wumbloozo in that order. The event officially ends at 9pm but Wumbloozo will continue their set until 11pm. The cover charge is $10 with an opportunity drawing throughout the event. Every penny goes to The City Of Hope Women's Cancer Programs because all the bands are donating their time and all the items for the drawing are being donated by friends, family and folks who want to help.
Lorey Mauer, the president of The Los Angeles Blues Society and host to a long running backyard blues party in South El Monte, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. With no insurance to cover the treatments, fundraising became a focus. Kelly Zirbes, a friend of Lorey's, offered to organize an event and raise the money so Lorey could pay for her treatments. Soon after Lorey was informed that she was eligible for a Medi-Cal program called “Every Woman Counts” and with that the City of Hope said she would not see a bill. The program helps women under 65 that are underinsured. To show her appreciation, Lorey and Kelly decided to still schedule the event with all proceeds donated to The City Of Hope.
Offers to play the event started streaming in and the first seven bands were chosen. There have been offers from at least twenty other bands to play and support Lorey, showing just how loved this woman is by the blues community.
The R&B Bombers are a unique blend of classic and contemporary American music styles that conjure up images of a Storyville speakeasy, the Cotton Club in Harlem, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis from the birth of Rock & Roll, B.B. and the rest of the Kings in a southern roadhouse or in Chicago, a Memphis soul stew with ingredients from the back roads of Macon and Augusta, Georgia, the sophistication of Billy Eckstine and Joe Williams fronting the Count Basie Band, and the bloodline of blues artists that have sprung from the most unlikely of locations, Santa Barbara, CA. "The R&B Bombers are honored to be playing for this terrific and important event! The City of Hope has been doing incredible work for so many years. They saved the life of the daughter of our keyboard player Ken Stange. For them to treat our great friend Lorey is just wonderful!" http://www.rbbombers.com/
The Scorch Sisters bring to the blues, a mix of jaw dropping virtuosity and down home raw, soul, with a sound uniquely their own. The "SISTAS" Alicia Morgan (Lead Vocals, Keys), Kimberly "KC" Allison-(Guitar)and Francesca Capasso- (Lead Vocals and Percussion) pump out a blend of fierce, soulful vocals and seasoned, blazing instrumental prowess! "As a four year breast cancer survivor I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and was paralyzed with fear because I was without insurance. Thank GOD for the BCCTP program, which covers uninsured women with breast and cervical cancer. Hospitals like UCLA/Olive View Medical Center and City of Hope accept and treat women in the BCCTP program. No woman should have to live in fear of being diagnosed with a female cancer because she has no insurance. I am honored and could not be prouder to participate in a fund raiser for such a wonderful hospital in honor of such a wonderful lady!" Blues Straight Up is a Blues Based Band often described as a blues ensemble with a big sound. Dubbed as “The Finest Chicano Blues Band on the Planet”. Blues Straight Up is North-East Los Angeles based (El Sereno, Calif). Contemporary with diverse interpretations of Blue and Blues & Rhythm. Performances include originals, standards, electric blues, sassy female attitude with a touch of “Blues in Español”. "Doing this gig is personal for me. My wife is a cancer survivor, so far, at least for three years. I lost my father and brother and several family members and friends to cancer. Some are still undergoing treatment. My wife and several people we know (including Lorey) are City of Hope patients. I can only say that the staff and attention given to patients is above and beyond any medical services I've encountered anywhere. Been there many times and what I witnessed was patients being treated with concern, dignity and respect. - Big Mike Rincon http://www.bluesstraightup.com/
Kelly's Lot plays roadhouse rockin' blues with a sound that is upbeat, heartfelt and fun. The band has been around since 1995 and has toured throughout the states. With the help of European fans and friends they toured across Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands the last 3 years and recorded a live CD from Brussels, BE. "My brother was treated for a couple years at City Of Hope during his battle with colon cancer. I was with him during many of his treatments and his surgery. I saw firsthand how wonderful they care for their patients" Kelly Z http://www.kellyslot.com/
Delgado Brothers - Driven by fierce independence, unified by family, and fortified by the brotherhood of music, the Delgado Brothers deliver the musical goods; topical anthem-worthy songs complemented by call-to-action lyrics, and East L.A. Soul. For over 30 years the Delgado Brothers have been music makers, collaborators and ordinary citizens; raising children, grieving the loss of parents, marrying & divorcing. All of this life experience may explain their flare for illuminating everyman's joys, sorrows, triumphs and losses. The Brothers' music has long been embraced both locally and globally by a wide spectrum of people undivided by culture, age or socioeconomic status. http://www.delgadobrothers.com/
Teresa James and her band have a funky, greasy southern sound where Texas Blues meets New Orleans. It has been said that 'if Delbert McClinton had a little sister she would sound like this' and it is that kind of passionate and powerful vocals that earned her a Blues Foundation nomination for 'Best Contemporary Female Vocalist' for one of her recent CDs. Another fan once said: 'She can sing like a bird or a bat out of hell'..."I am very happy to be a part of this fundraiser - Cancer has taken the lives of too many people that I love and I have seen the devastation that it can cause in the lives of the survivors. If there is anything that I can to help create a climate of hope or to lift the burden in any way, I am thrilled to do it - and if it involves hanging out and playing music with some of the best musicians in LA, then I am all for it!" -Teresa James http://www.teresajames.com/
Wumbloozo is an all originals band with songs that are somehow instantly recognizable. You find yourself singing or humming along almost immediately. If you like songs like "MUSTANG SALLY" you'll love WUMBLOOZO; if you like the early Stones, you'll love WUMBLOOZO, if you like the Animals, you'll love WUMBLOOZO. It is Old school rock and roll and blues like it oughta be! http://www.wumbloozo.com/
