Should Motorcyclists Be Allowed to Run Red Lights?

Illinois may be joining a growing number of states that allow motorcyclists and bicyclists to legally run red lights. That is, in cases when the intersection sensors don't recognize that they are even there.

Motorcycle rights groups say riders sometimes can get stuck at a light for several cycles because the lighter weight of the two-wheel vehicles won’t trigger the sensors. If a stoplight fails to turn green within a “reasonable period of time,” the legislation would allow a biker to proceed through the intersection after making sure it is clear.

This law, if signed by Gov. Pat Quinn, would go into effect everywhere in the state except for Chicago.
