Electric Motorcycles Recalled For Brake Problems
 By Jonathan Welsh
Zero Motorcycles The Zero S electric sport motorcycle is included in a recall aimed at fixing a problem with the brakes on certain bikes. Zero Motorcycles is recalling some of its model S and DS electric-powered motorcycles because of a potential problem with their front brakes. While the recall affects just 160 bikes, it is a significant blow to the fledgling company as it tries to sell electric bikes in the motorcycle mainstream.
The recall affects Zero S models from the 2009 model year that were built from Sept. 2 to Dec. 22, 2009; 2009 Zero DS models built from July 27 through Dec. 28, 2009; model year 2010 S bikes built from Feb. 1 2010 through March 31, 2011 and 2010 DS bikes built from Jan. 20 2010 to March 31, 2011.
In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Zero said the recall stems from the bracket to which the front brake caliper is mounted. Under high braking loads the bracket can deform permanently, which can result in poor alignment of the brake pads with the brake disc.
This misalignment can result in substandard braking performance, which could lead to a crash.
Under the recall, which is expected to begin this month, dealers will replace the brake caliper bracket with a redesigned version and replace the front brake pads in case they were subjected to irregular wear. They will also change the brake fluid of there are any signs that it has overheated. Owners may contact zero motorcycles at 888-786-9376 ext 45.
