CHARLOTTE, NC - SWAT Officer Dies After Suffering Injuries From Distraction Device at Home

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department are suffering the loss of one of their veteran SWAT officers after a distraction device discharged at the officer's home. Mint Hill Fire and Rescue arrived at the home of Officer Fred Thornton on Tinkerton Court, in Mint Hill, around 5:35 Friday afternoon. Upon arrival, officials found Officer Thornton suffering from life threatening injuries. He was transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Main, where he underwent surgery in an effort to save his life. Despite the heroic efforts by medical staff, Officer Thornton died later in the evening as a result of his injuries. Officer Thornton was a 28 1/2 year veteran of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. He was assigned to the North Tryon Division and a 23 year member of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. Members of CMPD have been with the officer's family throughout the evening and an investigation is being conducted by the Mint Hill Police Department with the assistance of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police.
