PATNA: Meet Pankaj Kumar Singh, who works as a quack in Chhapra. But few people have any idea that he is an active member of an international gang of motorcycle lifters, which was busted by the Patna police on Tuesday.

SSP Amit Kumar Jain said Patna police have been keeping an eye on the movements of vehicle lifters' gang operating in the city. He said that a joint police team from Kankerbagh, Patrakarnagar, Jakkanpur police stations and members of Special Cell led by Patna City SP Manu Maharaj carried out a raid in Kankerbagh and arrested a notorious vehicle lifter, Amit Kumar, a native of Islampur in Nalanda, Kallu Kumar and Saroj Kumar, with arms and ammunition, besides stolen bikes.

Jain said that acting on disclosures made by the arrested criminals, a police arrested Kallu Sah (Meena Bazaar, Alamganj) and Saroj Kumar (Dariyapur in Saran) and seized arms and ammunition. He said Amit is a notorious gangster and wanted in over a dozen cases of loot, dacoity and theft. He stole two wheelers from Patna and sold them to criminal gangs of Chhapra, Motihari, Bagaha and Siwan, Jain said. Police recovered seven stolen motorcycles and a Maruti car from the arrested criminals.

The SSP said that Amit, Kallu and Saroj used to sell stolen two-wheelers to Madan Kumar Singh, Pankaj and Pawan Tiwary at a throwaway price of Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000. The trio would then sell the bikes to a Motihari-based purchaser, Bhagvan Singh alias Kaka, at any price varying between Rs 11,000 and Rs 13,000. Kaka then, in connivance with Doodhnath Sahni (Bagaha), sold these vehicles in Nepal, he said.

Jain said besides seven stolen motorcycles and a Maruti car, police also seized two pistols, four live cartridges, Rs 11,000 cash, a master key and seven cellphones from the criminals.
