Group Raises Awareness About Motorcycle Safety

Dozens of people lined up on Highway 100 Saturday to raise awareness about motorcycle safety. The rally also focused on an open motorcycle fatality. It is third Motorcycle Awareness Rally for ABATE of Wisconsin, a motorcyclist advocacy group. They usually hold classes at State Fair Park. But for Saturday's rally ABATE members lined up with signs along Highway 100 in Wauwatosa, because that's where a driver struck a 52-year-old motorcycle rider with a car, killing the motorcyclist. That fatal accident happened last June 24. No charges have been filed, even though investigators determined the 66-year-old driver of the car was at fault. As it warms up and more bikes hit the road, ABATE simply asks motorists to be aware. “Remembering that we need to be a little extra careful,” said Steve Johnson of ABATE Wisconsin. “We fall into the whole pattern over the winter of not seeing motorcyclists. They're watching for a bigger object, but check in the mirror a little bit closer and make sure you don't have a motorcycle coming up along as well.”While this rally was held Saturday, ABATE is gearing up for May, which is motorcycle awareness month.
