DAV: May 2013 Newsletter

OFF THE WIRE
Dear Philip,

As our nation stops to honor heroes who gave everything this Memorial Day, you and I remain ever mindful of those who returned home, yet live with the constant pain of war in their bodies, minds and hearts.

Many veterans will need a lifetime of support, and that makes me grateful for the way you stand ever ready to help heroes through DAV.

Some gave all; all gave some. It’s a truth that echoes in patriotic hearts across the land as we join to honor America’s heroes on Memorial Day.

With a Memorial Day Salute!

Veterans Fight Changes to VA Benefits
veterans fight changes   DAV is joining a chorus of veterans and advocacy groups outraged by proposed changes to veteran disability payments and pensions. New cost-saving measures intended to address the nation’s debt ask a heavy price of veterans, who have already made deep sacrifices.

Veterans Hit the Slopes for Therapy
vets hit slopes   In April, nearly 400 veterans flocked to Colorado’s Snowmass Village for the 27th Annual National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. Co-sponsored by DAV and VA, the event uses sports as a way of helping injured veterans see all they can achieve and overcome.

DAV Sends Help on Wheels
DAV sends help   One of DAV’s Mobile Service Offices was on hand in Joplin, Missouri, to provide claims assistance and answer questions for local veterans. More than anything, the van is a sign that advocates like DAV’s Joseph Braun are there to support, inform – and fight – for fellow veterans in need.

The Truth About Veteran Unemployment
veteran unemployment   Finding a job is a top priority for service members leaving the military, yet unemployment remains high for veterans, especially those with service-connected disabilities. An issue of longstanding concern for DAV, high jobless rates for veterans may be linked to a new reality: The majority of today’s business leaders did not serve in the military.

DAV Driver Earns 100,000 Mile Award
driver earns reward   DAV volunteer driver John McClain earned high honors for logging 100,000 miles transporting veterans to the local VA hospital. Though only the second volunteer ever to reach such heights, John remains humble about his outstanding service: “It’s something to do and something that needed to be done.”

Corporations Donate Generously to Honor Veterans
corporations donate to dav   DAV is deeply grateful that so many corporations have chosen to support veterans through generous gifts to DAV. “While a majority of DAV’s donations come from a generous American public, giving by our corporate friends allows us the opportunity to meet the needs of more veterans and their families,” says DAV’s Marc Burgess.
