San Diego motorcycle club president gunned down

OFF THE WIRE
San Diego police searched Sunday for a drive-by shooter who gunned down the president of the Black Sabbath Motorcycle Club's original chapter as he worked on his bike in the clubhouse driveway with a friend.
Detectives haven't identified a motive for Friday night's killing of 51-year-old Clyde Thompson Jr., police Lt. Ernie Herbert said.
Police said Thompson and a friend were working on a motorcycle when a sport utility vehicle pulled up and a passenger opened fire. Thompson was pronounced dead at a hospital.
A statement on the club's website says the club is stunned by the killing of the respected member known as "Wild Dogg."
"He was a problem-solver, he was not a troublemaker," John Bunch, national president of the motorcycle club, told UT San Diego from Georgia. "We're very shocked and waiting with patience and prayer to find out exactly what happened."
Thompson took over as leader of the San Diego chapter late last year.
Bunch, a former San Diego resident, told the newspaper that Black Sabbath members have historically have been servicemen and tradesmen -- adopting nicknames to avoid misunderstandings with employers.
"We don't have a motorcycle club that has a reputation for trouble," Bunch said to UT San Diego. "So we can't imagine who would have the need or the desire to hurt one of our members."
Thompson was survived by a long-term girlfriend and two daughters, according to the club's website.
The club was founded in 1972 by seven black men who liked to ride on Sundays, the website said. The Mighty Black Sabbath M.C. Nation has since become a multicultural club with 17 chapters nationwide. The headquarters is in Atlanta.
The San Diego chapter is known as the "mother chapter."
