WV House passes bill revisiting motorcycle helmet law

OFF THE WIRE
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia would ease restrictions in its law requiring motorcycle helmets through a measure advancing to the state Senate.

The House of Delegates voted 93-3 Monday to pass a bill deleting one of three performance standards for required helmets.

The legislation removes the one set by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It leaves the standards issued by the Snell Memorial Foundation and the American National Standards Institute.

The bill as introduced allows auxiliary lights on motorcycles. The helmet provision was added to the bill while in committee.

House Judiciary Chairman Tim Miley said before Monday's vote that the State Police has had difficulty enforcing the federal standard.
