South Dakota - Spearfish to host 2012 Hells Angels convention

There is a noteworthy convention coming to Spearfish next summer, and it is not Rotary International.
The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club will be having a gathering of 500 to 600 members July 25-29, the week before the Sturgis rally.
"It's the Hells Angels USA Run," Spearfish Police Chief Pat Rotert said Friday. "For lack of a better word, it's their national convention."
It is also something that captures the attention of law enforcement officials, including Rotert. He and other law enforcement agencies and offices, including the state Division of Criminal Investigation and the South Dakota Highway Patrol, are already discussing the convention and what problems it might cause.
"We're just going through the planning process, getting prepared for it," he said. "We'll be preparing for 500 to 600 members, plus whatever associated folks they bring in. They'll stay in hotels, campgrounds, whatever, and they generally have a location for their meetings and events."
Rotert said he didn't know where the convention center will be. He is not aware of the event ever having been held in South Dakota. But it is something certain to capture more attention and cause more law-enforcement interest and vigilance than most conventions.
"Obviously, the Hells Angels is something that law enforcement in general is aware of," he said.
