Jeep driver fights with motorcycle riders..
A man is shot in an apparent case of road rage on Interstate 10 near Elliot Road in Tempe on Saturday.
I-10 westbound at Elliot Road was shut down for hours, from Saturday afternoon into the evening.
At about 3:13 p.m., the Department of Public Safety received calls about shots fired.
It started at I-10 and Wild Horse Pass. Officers said the driver of the Jeep got into an argument with a group of motorcycle riders as the Jeep was switching lanes.
Witnesses saw the whole thing, including one who did not want to be identified.
“Just out of nowhere, a white Jeep came and sideswiped three of them,” he said. “It was, ‘I’m getting over, and I’m taking three of you out with me.'”
The witness said he was driving right behind that Jeep and the group of motorcycles.
“There was dust in the air. There was smoke -- all the braking that was going on.”
He said the Jeep sped off, and the motorcycle group chased after him. A few miles up the freeway, near I-10 and Elliot, the Jeep hit the median and two other cars.
That's when the driver of the Jeep was shot in the face. One of the cars in the crash took off, along with the motorcycle group. Officers believe they might have been together.
The man who was shot was in good condition with non-life-threatening injuries, and he was released from a local hospital Saturday night.
There is a person in custody who may be a suspect, police said.
Officers want to talk to that group of motorcycle riders.
Investigators said it’s possible the driver of the Jeep could also face road rage charges.
No names were released.
