CADIZ —
Sheriff Ronald “Joe” Myers and Deputy Robert Toker announced recently that the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Office of Criminal Justice Services awarded $20,039 in federal traffic safety funding to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office for federal fiscal year 2012.
“These funds are essential in ensuring that we are doing everything we possibly can to keep our local community safe,” said Myers. “Based on crash data, targeting drivers who are speeding, under the influence or not wearing their safety belts is a priority for Harrison County, and we are pleased to work with our partners at the state level to address this safety issue.”
Crash data shows that Harrison County had a total of six fatal crashes over the three-year period of 2008 to 2010. To reduce these numbers, sheriff’s officers will conduct high-visibility enforcement, work overtime hours and hold educational and awareness events with the grant funds.
The funds are passed through OCJS from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support the efforts of safety partners statewide and focus on traffic safety priority areas such as restraint use, impaired driving, motorcycle safety and youthful drivers.
Competitive grant proposals are accepted and reviewed by OCJS, with funds awarded to projects that will have the greatest impact on reducing fatal crashes or significantly improving traffic safety systems.
