LORAIN — The Lorain Police Department has received more than $38,000 in federal funds to help reduce crashes in high-traffic areas.
The money will help police conduct high-visibility enforcement, work overtime hours and have educational awareness events, Sgt. Allan Cornwell said.
Chief Cel Rivera noted, “These funds are essential in ensuring that we are doing everything we possibly can to keep our local community safe.”
Police will focus on Broadway, East 28th Street, Grove Avenue, East and West Erie avenues and Leavitt Road. A total of 48 crashes on these roads resulted in 11 fatalities and 37 injuries between 2008 and 2010. Police also hope to limit fatal and serious injury motorcycle crashes to no more than five this year.
The money comes through the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Office of Criminal Justice Services from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support statewide efforts for restraint use, impaired driving prevention and motorcycle safety.
