AUSTRALIA - Shooting bikie's son broke the cardinal rule

OFF THE WIRE
WHOEVER shot the son of Mark Sandery broke "the paramount rule" of outlaw bikies, sources close to the gangs have warned.
The Advertiser has been told the shooting of the boy, 11, goes against the core values of bikies.
"When it comes to dealing with rivals, there are no hard and fast rules except for two," a source said yesterday.
"You try not to do it in public, and the paramount rule is that you never, ever hurt the wife or the kids.
"To a lot of the guys, their children mean everything ... that's why you just don't do it."
Sandery was a member of the Finks Outlaw Motorcycle Club, but there are conflicting reports on whether he remains a member.
His son was injured when two male intruders burst into a home on Military Rd, Semaphore, on Friday night.
The intruders fired twice into a room where the boy was sleeping, and both bullets struck him in the leg.
Yesterday, a man went to visit the boy in hospital. He was ordered off the premises by police, however, and barred from returning for 24 hours.
SA Police have expressed frustration over a lack of witness co-operation. Sources, however, claim police should have all the information they need to make arrests.
"They're listening in to the phones 24-7, so why don't the police have any leads so far?" one asked. "Where was Crime Gangs Task Force when this was happening?"
A source said the rule against harming family members was deeply ingrained in club culture.
"In jail, the lowest of the low are the paedophiles, and that carries over into life outside ... you just don't hurt children," he said.
He said that was one of the few similarities between bikies and police officers. "If something happened to a police officer, their comrades would rally to support the widow and her children," he said.
"Both groups look after their own ... these are very Australian people with very strong family ties."
There are now fears of reprisals over the shooting.
"We just don't know, because (we) can't recall another time when a kid has been hurt," one source said.
"I feel like this has got to be a mistake, like someone thought Sandery was there but didn't stop to check."
