Street shooting kills one, injures two in Copenhagen

OFF THE WIRE
A drive-by shooting that killed one young man and wounded two others has Copenhagen authorities worried about a resurgence in a two-year gxxg war plaguing the Danish capital.
Ove Dahl, the head of Copenhagen Police's homicide division, said it hadn't yet been determined whether Thursday attack was related to an on-going gang war that started in the same area in 2008.
"But when it's a open street shooting, you can't dismiss that connection," Dahl told reporters Friday.
The fatal shooting of a 19 year-old man in August 2008, just a few hundred meters from Thursday night's shooting, is believed to have started the current gxxg conflict.
In recent years, Copenhagen has been plagued by violence between gxxgs, some of whom come from ethnic minority communities, others from organized crime syndicates in Eastern Europe, and yet others who swear allegiance to motorcycle groups such as the Hells' Angels.
In the past, gxxgs wars in Copenhagen have been fought over control of the illicit drug trade, prostitution, and the extortion of "protection money" from local businesses.
Claus Buhr, legal editor for DR News, Denmark's national broadcaster, said that a large number of so-called "immigrant" gxxgs are now operating in Copenhagen and increasingly coming into conflict with each other.
"When talking to gxxg members, I am led to believe that they do not know who is behind these shootings," Buhr said, "It is very dangerous because, when they go out to take revenge, they shoot at those they think have attacked them. But those are not necessarily the right people, and that means more and more gxxgs are drawn into the conflict."
Buhr added that investigations show that the gxxgs are beginning to arm themselves more seriously, in fear of being sucked into the violence. He estimated that up to 7 different gxxgs could be involved.
