MAHRA celebrates its 25th birthday this year.
"Pretty awesome," one person said. Definitely a very special milestone was another comment. These responses to the recognition of the 25th anniversary of the Marion Area Harley Riders Association. A loosely organized social group of bikers that ride Harleys, celebrate a lifestyle, and like thousands of motorcycle clubs all over the U.S., we raise money for one charity or another, when they are not "just ridin."
MAHRA was organized and started March 29, 1986. The club rented a space in an old schoolhouse for a meeting house. Members came from all corners of society: butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, factory specialists, electricians, technicians, teachers and preachers.
MAHRA started raising funds for a local special organization, Christmas Clearinghouse of Marion. No one kept track of how much we've raised and donated over the years, but reflection reveals we are well over $100 million! In 2010, the check was for $13,750!
Marion citizens have commented that they look forward to seeing this group of Bikers in Santa Hats each fall as they "panhandle" in the street for money to benefit Christmas Clearinghouse. One hundred percent is always given to that charity. One MAHRA member said, "We could never accomplish what we do without the support of Marion citizens who are so giving."
Part II of MAHRA's efforts is their Toy Run held the first weekend in October. Bikers come from all around for this annual fundraiser, and good time. A bike ride that ends with an auction and free food!
We also have raised money to send a blind boy to summer camp and supported many other fundraisers, such as the local Brandy Winfield ride each June. In July, we work and raise money for the Forest Ohio Fire Department at the annual Forest Festival. Club membership is dedicated to Harley Davidson Motorcycles.
Clubs and social organizations come and go, but like Harley Davidson Corporation, which celebrated its 105th year in business in 2008, MAHRA has staying power. Their June Rodeo and Bike Party, June 18, is an open birthday celebration. Come help us celebrate!
Happy Birthday MAHRA!
