Federal grant to pay for motorcycle safety checkpoints
March 7, 2011
The Georgia Department of Public Safety will conduct six one-day motorcycle safety checkpoints between March 1 and Dec. 31, 2012, in hopes of reducing the number of crashes involving motorcycles that result in injuries and fatalities.
The first checkpoints of 2011 will be held Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. along Interstate 75 at the southbound commercial vehicle inspection station in Monroe County and along Interstate 95 in Chatham County, according to a state patrol news release. Motorcycles will be instructed by portable road signs to exit at the inspection stations.
State troopers and officers will be checking to see if motorcycle drivers have proper licenses and if they are wearing Department of Transportation-approved helmets. They also will be checking to ensure that motorcycles are in good operating condition with “good tires, a headlight and a taillight that is working,” according to the release.
For the average driver with a proper license and equipment, the delay should last about a minute, according to the release. A $70,000 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant is funding the checkpoint initiative, according to the release.
