A 27-year-old Oceanside resident, Devin Allen, was fatally stabbed about 10:30 p.m. Friday in Carlsbad, authorities said Saturday.
Carlsbad police responded to a call near Harding Street and Carol Place. When they arrived, Allen was unconscious on the ground, said David Bernstein, 27, a resident of Vista and a close friend of Allen's.
Allen was flown by helicopter to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido but was pronounced dead about an hour later, the San Diego County medical examiner's office said.
Bernstein said he and Allen were with a group of friends at Hensley's Flying Elephant Pub and Grill when they decided to move on to a different establishment. While they were walking to their vehicles, Bernstein said, two men stopped Allen and two of his friends to ask for a cigarette. Without any physical provocation, Bernstein said, Allen was stabbed.
"It happened so fast," he said. "One minute we're laughing and taking pictures, the next second he's being flown to the hospital and then they are telling us he died."
Bernstein said other witnesses in the area said the two men who attacked Allen had been provocative throughout the night and were flashing gang signs.
Allen, a painter and tiler for industry buildings, "never fights," Bernstein said. Described as "the peacekeeper" of their group of friends, he enjoyed music and skateboarding.
"Devin was a great guy," Bernstein said. "One of those guys who would pull over to help you on the side of the road even if he was late to work."
Allen was about to celebrate his 28th birthday on April 1 and had a 4-year-old daughter, Bernstein said.
"She was his world," Bernstein said. "That kills me. How are you going to tell a 4-year-old her daddy was murdered?"
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, Carlsbad police Lt. Paul Mendes said.
