BRP Is Recalling Certain Three-Wheel Motorcycles

Some Can-Am Spyder models could shift into reverse unexpectedly. Bombardier Recreational Products Inc., maker of three-wheel motorcycles and four-wheel all-terrain vehicles under the Can-Am brand name, is recalling certain Spyder RT SM5 models of its three-wheel motorcycles from the 2011 model year to fix a possible problem with their transmissions.

When the rider is downshifting, it is possible to inadvertently engage reverse without depressing the reverse button. The potentially dangerous condition stems from a defective reverse actuator cable, the company said in documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If the transmission shifts into reverse while the vehicle is moving forward, the rear wheel could lock and cause the engine to stall. If this happens while vehicle is stopped or moving forward slowly, the vehicle could back up unexpectedly, possibly causing a crash.

Under the recall, dealers will check for proper operation of the reverse actuator and replace it if defective. he recall affects 160 vehicles.

Bombardier has been marketing the Spyder three-wheeler for a few years, aiming to bridge the gap between street motorcycles and other so-called powersports vehicles such as snowmobiles and personal watercraft. Unlike motorcycles, the Spyder stays upright on its own when stopped, sparing riders the anxiety often associated with the possibility of tipping over. However, the Spyder’s greater size and weight necessitate a car-like reverse gear absent on most traditional motorcycles.
