For the Grassroot Wednesdays internet radio show this week, I very much want to review and discuss the long-term detention without bail of Reverend Roger Christie of Hawaii Cannabis Ministry. His ministry uses cannabis as a sacrament.

The Green 14 were arrested on various charges. 13 of those arrested were released on bail. However, Roger Christie has been held at the Honolulu Federal Detention Center and denied bail 5 times since July 8, 2010. His trial on federal drug trafficking charges has been scheduled for April 26, 2011, but there is a possibility that the feds are going to push it out until June. His primary defense is that marijuana is a sacrament used by the ministry and its' members. By the way, if you check out some of the legal briefs and motions filed by the prosecution, they are replete with wiretapped private conversations between the ministry and the members.
Obviously, Roger is not a danger to the community, as the feds contend. It appears the only thing he is a danger to is a political idea that everyone must be so afraid of government that they abide by even the most inhumane laws, even when they are harmful to people, the planet, and the economy.
(Yes there is a danger to the planet since cannabis is good for the environment, and the chemicals the feds have been using to eradicate them are carcinogens. Yes, cannabis and hemp can be good for the economy. Hemp could be one of our best natural resources as it can be used to make many products.)
(Yes, the cannabis laws are inhumane. Consider the number of people criminalized. Consider the people who need medical marijuana but are denied it. Consider Roger Christie held without bail, which makes it extremely difficult to prepare a defense, for over a year.)
So, this might be a very important case in the future. As is usual, the government took all Christies money which he could have used to hire an attorney, so he is using a public defender and there is a legal defense fund. Please spread the word for everyone to watch the Roger Christie trial closely, and do what we can to help.
I am going to ask one or more of the people who are more knowledgeable about this case to join the discussion. If anyone would like to study up in advance to the show, in order to be more knowledgeable, here are some links.
http://www.thc-ministry.org/  for more information about the ministry and the arrests and incarceration.

http://the-last-marijuana-trial.com/ for what might shape up to be an important court trial. It is, of course, completely railroaded by an injustice system which is on the government payroll. They are doing good in terms of publishing court documents related to the case. Warning: the presumptions in the court documents that the courts are allowing may upset you.

Even if you do not have a desire to use cannabis or hemp in any form, you all love liberty, so please tune in, and turn on if you have such a gumption.

By the way, I work a large variety of rights issues because it is the right thing to do. It is also beneficial to form ties with the many rights groups working the many rights issues. There are some VERY interesting ideas about how to force the government to legalize cannabis, such as "guerrilla seeding" everywhere, and there is also a wealth of knowledge about the many benefits of cannabis, such as some information I learned today at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectpeace
