Killer appealing his conviction

Timothy O'Reilly, a motorcycle club member who escaped the death penalty in August for killing a man a decade ago during an armed robbery, is appealing his conviction.
O'Reilly, 37, of Detroit, who was sentenced to mandatory life in prison for killing armored car guard Norman Stephens, filed his notice to appeal Monday before the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

He was convicted Aug. 3 in the 2001 shooting death of Stephens, a 30-year-old married father of six who was gunned down while restocking ATMs at the Dearborn Federal Credit Union. Six men took part in the $204,000 heist. Three of them testified against O'Reilly during a six-week trial.
Prosecutors pushed for the death penalty, but jurors gave O'Reilly life in prison after they were unable to conclude that he fired the fatal shot.
O'Reilly was the first person tried under the federal death penalty in eastern Michigan since 2003.

Motive is sought in shooting deaths

Police are investigating a motive in a murder-suicide on Detroit's west side Tuesday afternoon.
Sgt. Eren Stephens said police were called at 12:54 p.m. to the 3500 block of 15th Street.
Two women, ages 21 and 26, were found shot to death.
Preliminary evidence shows the 21-year-old shot the 26-year-old before shooting herself, Stephens said.
Their relationship is unknown.
