Missouri - Motorcyclists Fighting for Right to Ride Without Helmets

OFF THE WIRE
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Several motorcyclists appealed to the Missouri Senate Transportation Committee on Wednesday to repeal the mandatory helmet law for all motorcycle riders. The motorcyclists made claims that helmets did not make the riders more safe and, therefore, should not be a requirement on the road.
The motorcyclists that appealed to the committee argued that helmets made it more difficult to hear sounds on the road and may cause riders to pass out from heat exhaustion.
But several doctors testified that motorcyclists should wear helmets to prevent serious brain damage and death.
The bill that motorcyclists put to the committee would revise the law so that only riders under 21 would be required to wear helmets. The committee will take a vote on the bill next week.
