HOUSTON - A veteran Houston Police officer is the target of a federal and state investigation.
Daniel Muhammad, 40, is under investigation for allegedly running a pill mill, sources told FOX 26 News. That would be the distribution of prescription pills through a pharmacy or some other business for the specific purpose of selling pain medication to those who may not actually need it.
John Cannon with the Houston Police department confirmed Senior Officer Muhammad is being investigated criminally by the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Harris County District Attorney's office.
Muhammad, who's been with HPD since 1997, has been relieved of duty with pay while this probe is underway. Those who are familiar with the officer say they are absolutely shocked by these charges. They say it is totally out of character by some who described the cop as squeaky clean.
The Houston Police Officers Union said they could not comment on the case because Muhammad was not a member of their organization. Muhammad has not been charged with a crime and these are only allegations that the DEA and the DA's office are looking into.
