OFF THE WIRE

November 19, 2010

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Davis,

Thank you for informing me of your support for H. Res. 1498, Supporting efforts to retain the ban on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) ability to lobby State legislators using Federal tax dollars and urging the NHTSA to focus on crash prevention and rider education and training. Your thoughts on this important matter are most welcome and appreciated.
As a co-sponsor of H.R. 1498, I agree with you.
As you know, on July, 1, 2010, Representative James Sensenbrenner (WI) introduced H. Res 1498, which I have co-sponsored. If adopted, H. Res 1498 would express the House of Representatives' support for the existing ban on the ability of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to lobby state legislators using federal tax dollars. In addition, H. Res. 1498 would serve to encourage the NHTSA to focus on crash prevention; rider education and training; proper licensing; and reducing impaired riding instead of promoting mandatory helmet use laws. To reaffirm the Tenth Amendment, H. Res. 1498 would declare any federal law that supersedes state laws regarding helmet use and the denial of health insurance coverage should not be implemented. Presently, H. Res. 1498 awaits action in the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
Rest assured, your support for H. Res. 1498 will be well remembered during the 111th Congress. Again, thank you for contacting me and for all you do for our community and country. I care about you and if I or my staff can be of assistance to you regarding this issue or any other, please contact us at the Woodbury or St. Cloud/Waite Park district office or the Washington , DC office.
Sincerely,
Michele Bachmann
Member of Congress
