FROM the New DMV Drivers Handbook

F.Y.I. Motorcycles are mentioned in two different parts of the 2010 DMV "Drivers Handbook" printed mainly for auto drivers. On page 34 under the heading of "carpool/HOV lanes" it states that "Motorcycle riders may use designated (HOV)lanes, unless otherwise posted". And on pages 59 & 60 under the subject of (sharing the road with) Motorcycles, they dedicated a full page of information regarding "folowing these rules to respect he right-of-way and safely share the road with motorcyclists". Including "Motorcycles may travel faster than traffic during congested road conditions and can legally travel in the unused space between two lines of moving or stationary vehicles, which is commonly called "Lane Splitting".
