Arkansas Cyclists Oppose Helmet Law
November 2010 Motorcycle enthusiasts in Arkansas responded to a federal push for a new helmet law Monday.
Earlier this month, the National Transportation Safety Board added motorcycle safety to its most wanted list. It's a list of issues the NTSB considers most important to road safety.
The NTSB doesn't develop legislation, but does make safety recommendations. However, through the use of federal funds, NTSB says it's in a unique position to effect change at the state level.
Arkansas is one of 30 states that doesn't require all motorcycle riders wear a helmet.
Some bikers say if the recommendation translates to legislation---then there will be a fight.
"There are many many debilitating injuries that are wrapped up around football but I never heard anybody say lets just eliminate football or let's make football players have more insurance than the rest of the public," argues Rodney Roberts who owns Rodney's Cycle House.
According to state police, motorcycle deaths in Arkansas are on the rise after going a substantial drop in 2008.
