Part II, Harley-Davidson DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) 2007-2009 revealed.

Biker Chad

Part II

Last month I told you how to access your Harley’s DTC codes. I hope you got to read Part one of this series in the last issue, but if not try to get in contact with our editor Richee Lee at editor@saddletrampusa.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Richee is an avid Harley rider and a great guy, he will get you hooked up with a subscription and any back issues if they available.

So now that we all know how to get the codes out of the bike’s computer, what do they mean? I have to say that even when you pull a code, or multiple codes, it does not mean that you can say you are a master mechanic. What I am trying to say is that the description of the codes is not always accurate enough to tell you why the code was stored, or what the exact fix is. What it does tell you is the where to start as you begin to diagnose a possible problem. The codes just tell you that the bike’s sensors and computer software read and stored a fault in a system of many components. I will give you an example: Lets say that your check engine light comes on. You then follow the steps in Part I of this series. You get a code (P1356 rear cylinder no combustion.) The code tells you what the sensor(s) picked up on, but not why it happened, so it is still necessary to consider other factors. Again I will give an example: if the P1356 code comes along with codes like: (P1355 rear ignition coil driver high or shorted), (P0263 rear injector open or low), (P0154 rear oxygen sensor inactive), you will have consider the combination of multiple codes and the reason they come up. A little cause and effect may need to be applied in order to make a proper diagnosis.

So what if you can’t fix the problem on the roadside? Well, you can use the codes to make a more educated decision to keep riding until you can get to a repair shop. If you don’t think it is safe to ride, call a local repair shop, tell them what the codes are, and decide together if riding to the shop or getting it picked up.

Now the moment you have all been waiting for. What do the codes mean? I will list the first batch of codes to close out Part II of this series. There are more than one batch of codes to list, so I will have to list them in all in the coming parts of this series. As always, ride safe and remember knowledge is power my friends.
