LETTER In regards to the loud exhaust noises emitted by the cars of the younger generation, I agree with the letter as written by Gloria Lussier. Why should the public in general be victims of those who want to drive a car that sounds like a racing car on highways and city streets? The Town of Caledon was noted in the Saturday Star as instituting a program to limit motorcycle exhaust noise to 95 dB (decibels) when measured at a set distance from the tailpipe. The Highway Traffic Act just states mufflers shall not emit excessive noise and also follows this 95dB rule. It is possible the manufacturer of these cherry bomb type mufflers know this criteria and have manufactured their products to comply with this acceptable noise volume. A Porsche factory exhaust is set at 99dB, a Harley Davidson Softail Motorcycle factory exhaust is set at 102dB at cruising speed, a Yamaha YZF motorcycle exhaust is set at 116dB at idle. The cruncher is a city bus exhaust is 100.2 dB travelling less than 5 kph. The only way to reduce this noise level would be for the City of Brampton to institute their own bylaws to set lower limits to reduce noise pollution. Another thought to ponder is the music levels emitted from our younger (soon to be deaf) generation with the high-power amps and efficient speaker systems that give my butt a massage when they park near me in traffic. Guidelines in place to limit this noise generation? I have no idea so let us leave that for another day. Oh by the way, this information was used by someone in a court of law to beat a noisy muffler system when he received a ticket from a police officer.
