Hells Angels' bikes seized for excessive speeding

OFF THE WIRE
Two Hells Angels on their way to a funeral had their motorcycles impounded after police say they were spotted going double the speed limit in a construction zone.

RCMP officers in an unmarked vehicle spotted the two men -- both wearing patches identifying them as members of the motorcycle gang -- on Highway 1 near 20th Street in Langley just before noon on Wednesday.

The Mounties estimate the bikes were travelling as fast as 160 kilometres per hour.

The RCMP helicopter Air 1 then followed the two motorcycles along the highway until they stopped at the Hells Angels Nomad Chapter clubhouse near the border between Burnaby and Vancouver.

Burnaby officers stopped both drivers and seized their bikes under the new excessive speeding legislation. They were ticketed for excessive speeding and riding in tandem.

Police say the bikes passed through "considerable construction" on the way from Langley to Burnaby.

Sgt. Peter Thiessen told CTV News that the two bikers were on their way to a funeral, but could not confirm if it was the service for 15-year-old Laura Szendrei, who was beaten to death in a Delta park over the weekend.

"We have reason to believe they were en route, not only to their clubhouse, but they were en route to a funeral somewhere in the Lower Mainland," he said.

Police have confirmed that Hells Angels members attended Szendrei's funeral Wednesday in support of her father.
