May 2010, as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.”PROCLAMATION by theGovernor of the State of California Our state is home to miles of roads amongst beautiful scenery, from stretches of coastline to breathtaking mountains. These roads make the state an excellent place to drive a motorcycle and take in all our amazing sights. Yet, while riding a motorcycle is a great way to see California, it is extremely important that every driver take necessary precautions to maintain motorcycle safety.
Between 1998 and 2008, there was an increase in motorcycle registrations in our state of over 100 percent. Every citizen deserves to experience the joys of riding a motorcycle, but with more motorcycles on the road everyone must be more aware of their safety. This means cyclists must engage in safe practices such as wearing a helmet every time they ride. Furthermore, other drivers must make sure they are aware of motorcycles around them.
Our California Highway Patrol does its part to promote safety through campaigns such as “Look Twice, Save a Life”, encouraging drivers to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program, it is estimated that 65,000 people each year are trained in both basic and advanced driving techniques.
These programs help save lives, but every driver must do their part. Riding a motorcycle through our Golden State can be an exhilarating experience, and I encourage all Californians to do so safely.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim May 2010, as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.”
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 7th day of May 2010.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER Governor of California
