On Wednesday May 19, 2010 the Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Enforcement Detail conducted a Motorcycle Safety / DUI Saturation Patrol throughout the City of Bakersfield targeting motorcyclist, and other motorists violating rules of the road commonly associated with collisions involving motorcycle riders here in the city of Bakersfield.
As a result of this enforcement event 37 motorists and 37 motorcycle riders were stopped and contacted by Officers; 35 of those drivers and motorcyclist stopped were issued citations for vehicle code violations, including improper equipment, unsafe lane change, use of cell phone and no helmet; 7 motorcyclist were asked to complete Field Sobriety Tests to determine their level of impairment; None of those motorcyclist were found to be in violation of DUI; 2 drivers were cited for driving on a suspended/revoked license and their vehicles impounded for 30 days.
This Motorcycle Safety/DUI Saturation Patrol is in an effort to reduce the number of persons injured or killed each year in motorcycle and DUI related collisions. A major component of this enforcement event is to increase awareness of the dangers of reckless motorcycle operations, impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
