http://www.newswise.com/articles/loyola-biker-nurse-to-offer-crash-course-in-motorcycle-safety Newswise — Monday through Friday, Teresa McClelland, RN, works as the clinical coordinator at Loyola Center for Heart & Vascular Medicine at Park Ridge. Come the weekend, this Chicago native jumps on her motorcycle and heads out on the highway.
McClelland knows a thing or two about the dangers of motorcycles from her ten years of experience as a trauma nurse specialist and emergency medical services educator. She has taken this knowledge and combined her love for this adrenaline-inducing hobby with her passion for teaching by offering a class called, "A Crash Course for the Motorcyclist."
The course is geared toward motorcyclists and scooter riders as well as nurses and emergency medical service specialists. McClelland offers tips for what to do in the first minutes after a motorcycle crash until professional help arrives. She focuses on techniques to prevent further injuries, assess the situation and treat the injured with life-sustaining care through helmet removal and jaw thrust breathing exercises.
The next classes will take place from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on April 17 and 18 at Loyola University Health System, 2160 S. First Avenue, Maywood, IL, Maguire Center, lecture hall B.
