Motorcycle club to meet in Ada Saturday

Biker Rights Issues
Ada — The Kiamichi Chapter of ABATE (American Bikers for Awareness Education and Training) will meet Saturday, March and sponsors of the event said all area motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to attend.
The meeting will take place at Rib Crib on Lonnie Abbott Industrial Blvd.
“The meeting will get started at 10 a.m. and the agenda will include a sign-up of members, election of officers, adoption of bylaws and discussion of the legislative breakfast,” said Tony Brister, event coordinator.
Besides fun, food and fellowship, Brister said ABATE has several goals in mind as an organization.
One goal is to promote safety awareness among motorcycle riders. This is done through the support of local motorcycle education programs.
Another area of primary concern is the lobbying of the state legislature over laws governing motorcycle safety issues.
Fundraising has also been a primary focus of ABATE members in the past and Brister said he expects the new chapter will keep the same humanitarian tradition.
“We have helped with several charity events over the years. One thing we have done is hold a poker run where we collected gifts for the Marine Corp’s annual Toys for Tots,” Brister, an Elmore City resident, said.
“We held another fundraiser recently at Elmore City. The money we raised went to help meet the medical and personal needs of a man who was battling a life-threatening illness.”
Brister said there are only two requirements for joining the new ABATE chapter.
“You have to like motorcycles and be at least 18 years of age.”
While activities revolve around motorcycles, members need not own one to join.
The annual fee to be a member of the new ABATE chapter is $20 which will include a monthly newsletter and a state ABATE embroidered patch. Ideas for a design for the new chapter patch will be among the topics discussed at the meeting on Saturday.
