SAE J2825 DECIBLE TEST

SAE J2825 SOUND TESTING

I was just speaking to Chris Real of DPS Technical who helped the SAE set up the J2825 on-road motorcycle decibel testing program.
Chris said that the SAE tested about a thousand different bikes, each with different mufflers and pipes, and said that the results were pretty liberal toward motorcycle owners with the outcome.

He said that using the J2825 properly, about 90 % (ninety percent) of bikes with Aftermarket mufflers would pass the test.

For this reason, he said that if Pavley pushes her bill through, his hope would be that it stresses noise, rather than tampering, because most bikes with some kind of muffler would pass the decibel test, while any bike without a stock muffler would fail a tampering test….(not counting BUB, Vanson Hines, and a few other qualified aftermarket pipes. )

Using the SAE j2825 test, a straight pipe, such as a 16 & 18 shotgun steel exhaust or header would not pass the test .
